Telangana Songs and Dances Reverberate Chicago Telangana Night

Telangana NRIs living in and around Chicago area celebrated Telangana Night
2006 on march 4th, Saturday at BARN Recreation Center, Naperville IL. About 200
people, well beyond expectations, attended the event and it was a grand success
by any measure. Telangana Development Forum (TDF), Chicago chapter, organized
the event.
Event started at 7 p.m. with welcome address by Purna Allamneni, Manju Reddy
took over as the MC for the night. The cultural program began with a slide show
that pays a tribute to Telangana titled "Glory of Telangana" consisting of the
famous Telangana song: ‘Jaya Jayahe Telangana’. The song was matched with a
slide show that depicts various aspects of Telangana cultural and historical
heritage, rural and urban lifestyle, various festivals and jatharas. The show
took the audience down the nostalgic trip back home and made them long for the
days they were in India living those pictures.
The slide show was followed by a folk dance by Nishu and Alekhya that energized
the audience and became instant hit.
Srini Palthepu gave a presentation about TDF-USA giving a brief history of TDF
outlining the circumstances in which TDF was born and its goals. TDF is a
not-for-profit and non-political organization was born out of frustration that
there are no forums or avenues that represent Telangana identity and talks
about Telangana problems that are unique to our region. Many of the Telangana
underdevelopment issues are caused by discrimination by successive governments.
He also gave an overview of various activities of TDF in USA as well as in
India.
The next program was classical dance “Abhang” and “Tillana” part of Bharata
Natyam performed by Suman Adishesh. The audience was very receptive, attentive
and truly delighted by her performance. Suman graciously agreed to perform for
the benefit of TDF with a very short notice.
The next program was a presentation about TDF developmental activities with
focus on Rural Libraries and Eye Camps by Rajeswar Rao Lingampalli. He
explained developmental activities that propel in TDF are engaging in and
showed some pictures accompanied by video clips. Songs by Ashok and Ravichandra
Thokala captivated audience. The main program was followed by sumptuous dinner
with 20 different dishes.
After dinner, some excerpts from the Documentary titled 'Still Seeking Justice:
A Story of Telangana' was shown. The documentary was a powerful depiction of
how successive governments letdown Telangana by systemic discrimination and
exploitation.
The program ended with Srini Palthepu introducing the 'TDF-Team' from Chicago
and thanking them for all the hard work. The team included: Purna Allamneni,
Venkat Thudi, Kishan Reddy, Prasad Balmoori, Sridhar Reddy Loka, Venkat Ramana
Juwadi, Rajeswar Rao Lingampali, Ravichandra Thokala, Venkat Pradeep Damidi,
Sreenath Chinnala, Manju Reddy, Ramu Kalwala, Ashok Mudrakola.
